Splatoon to Add New Levels, Minigun, and Buckets

Splatoon, Nintendo’s quirky take on the multiplayer-shooter that shipped on Wii U in May, is set to be updated with new weapons, apparel, and levels to battle on.

A television advert that recently aired in Japan, which you can see below, offers a brief glimpse on the new weapons players can use. At one stage, a player is seen firing paint from a six-barrelled minigun, while another player is shown dispatching enemies by tossing buckets of paint at them.

To offer additional insight into the smaller details of Nintendo’s Splatoon advert , the GameXplain YouTube channel has published a video breakdown of all the new content that can be seen in the thirty-second TV spot.

The GameXplain presenter points out that Splatoon’s new minigun appears to be a charge weapon, meaning that spraying paint will not be instant, though the rate of fire is likely to be the fastest in the game. An extra-large paint canister is attached to the weapon.

Meanwhile, the bucket appears to be Nintendo’s take on the traditional shotgun, offering a powerful blast at close range, but one that diminishes rapidly over distance.

Briefly, the video touches on the new Rainmaker weapon too, which appears to launch paint tornadoes.

Elsewhere in the trailer, two new levels can be seen. The first is a roof of an apartment complex, which offers multiple layers of verticality along with some hiding spots. The other is a long bridge, similar in structure to something like the The Golden Gate, offering narrow strips to battle on.

GameSpot’s Splatoon review was particularly positive about the Wii U title. It concluded: “Splatoon is the antithesis to the modern shooter, but it primarily deserves recognition for what it is, not what it isn’t. It’s a wonderful game with charm and inventive ideas that work and pave the way for new experiences in an otherwise stale category of games.”
