After beating the punishingly difficult Dark Souls using Rock Band controllers and the Donkey Kong bongo drum set, Redditor GMABT–real name Benjamin “Bearzly” Gwin–has taken things to the next, absurd level.
He explains on Reddit that he’s now beaten the the 2011 RPG using only his voice. How is that possible?
Gwin used software called VoiceAttack (check it out here) to translate voice controls into keyboard inputs. But it wasn’t perfect. He writes that there was instances of lag in some cases of around 1.5 seconds. That makes his playthrough all the more impressive and downright hard to even fathom.
Check out one of the videos of the playthrough below; head to his YouTube page to see the rest.
He used some macros, but admits this was no easy run. “I ended up with a wide variety of commands (including some complex macros) but it was still extremely difficult,” he explained.
The voice-enabled Dark Souls playthrough took 30 hours (he lost his voice several times), after which he died 485 times. He said he considered throwing in the towel on multiple occasions, but powered through and has now achieved something truly amazing.
“I doubt I will try anything more insane than this, but I’m open to suggestions,” he wrote.
The next Dark Souls game is Dark Souls III, which launches in 2016 for Xbox One, PlayStation 4, and PC. GameSpot recently sat down with the game’s director, Hidetaka Miyazaki, for an in-depth interview.
