The PlayStation 4 shipped another four million units during the quarter ended September 30, bringing the console’s new total to 29.3 million, Sony announced today as part of its latest earnings report. By comparison, Sony shipped 3.3 million PS4 consoles during the same quarter last year.
Sony’s gaming division, which it calls Game & Network Services, posted revenue of ¥360.7 billion ($3 billion) during the quarter, up 16.5 percent compared to the same period last year. The uptick in sales was driven by increases in PS4 game sales, but offset by lower PlayStation 3 sales compared to last year.
Operating income, meanwhile, was ¥23.9 billion ($199 million), compared to ¥21.8 billion ($180 million), an increase of 9.8 percent. Again, the increase was driven in part by strong PS4 software sales.
Sony also today increased its full-year outlook for the PS4. It said it now expects Game & Network Service sales to be higher than forecast in July “due to an expected increase in PS4 hardware unit sales and PS4 software sales.” Operating income, too, is expected to come in higher than anticipated as a result of strong software sales and PS4 hardware cost reductions.
Specifically, Sony said it previously expected to ship 16.5 million PS4s for the full fiscal year, but now it anticipates that figure to be one million higher at 17.5 million. By comparison, Sony shipped 14.8 million PS4s during the previous fiscal year.
Overall, Sony–which has numerous business divisions outside of gaming–posted revenue of ¥1.89 trillion ($15.6 billion) for the quarter, a .5 percent decrease from last year. Operating income for the quarter stood at ¥88 million ($727,952), which was significantly better than the ¥85.6 million ($707,748) loss it recorded last year.
