The release of Call of Duty: Black Ops III today, November 6, marks something of a change for the blockbuster shooter series. No longer is it Microsoft’s logo that shows up at the end of its commercials, but rather Sony’s. In addition, the PlayStation 4 got a Black Ops III special-edition console, not the Xbox One, while all DLC for the game will launch first on PlayStation platforms, another departure from before.

This is all happening as a result of Sony’s new co-marketing and exclusivity partnership with Activision, which was announced back at E3 in June. With the release of Black Ops III today, Sony’s Adam Boyes has released a statement to mark the occasion and what it means for the PlayStation brand in the future.

“This is a historic partnership that makes PlayStation the best place to play Call of Duty,” he said. “The massive reception to the game’s multiplayer beta only a few months ago demonstrated the huge appetite our fans have for this franchise and the anticipation for Black Ops III. This is the game our fans want, and we’re proud to welcome Call of Duty to its new home on PlayStation 4.”

Boyes previously said that Sony’s existing co-marketing partnership with Activision for Destiny helped the Call of Duty deal happen.

According to PlayStation UK marketing manager Lauren Bradley, shooter fans this console generation are are “tending to switch over to PS4.”

Microsoft doesn’t sound worried, however. Xbox marketing boss Aaron Greenberg recently said he believes the Xbox One will continue to be where most core shooter fans play this year and beyond.

“If you look at what are the most popular games in the industry; well, today, the number one genre is shooters,” he said. “So if you want to play Halo and Gears of War and Call of Duty and you want to play Battlefront, you’re only going to be able to do that on Xbox One. And so, we feel like we’ll continue to be where more of the core shooter fans continue to play. We’ll continue to be where most of the multiplayer gaming continues to happen.”
