Young British star Tom Holland will be the third actor in little over a decade to play Peter Parker, aka much-loved wall-crawling superhero Spider-Man. Holland will make his debut as part of Captain America: Civil War‘s ensemble cast, before starring in his own movie in 2017. Now the actor has spoken about what will set the new Spider-Man movie apart from previous versions.

In a new interview with The Daily Beast, Holland explained that Spider-Man will feel very different to most other modern superhero movies. “It’s not The Dark Knight,” he said. “One of the special things about what we’re going to try and create is that you’re going to see the biggest independent film ever.

“It’s not going to be an epic thing; it’s going to be a film surrounded by these incredible things, but that follows this boy and his life. Peter Parker is a favorite of many because everyone can relate to him, and we’re going to try to make everyone relate to our Peter Parker.”

Director Jon Watt had previously stated that the movie would be a “John Hughes version of Spider-Man”, something which Holland confirms. “John Hughes is a perfect example of what we’re going to try and do,” he said.

As for Spidey’s role in Civil War, the film’s co-director Anthony Russo has provided some hints that he might wear the distinctive red-and-gold spider armour that featured in the Civil War comic books. “We’re still working on a few things, like the costume. He’s not ready yet because so much will be produced with special effects,” he told Brazilian site SuperInteressante, via Den of Geek. “The film will show a mix of what everyone is waiting for, with a little twist.”

Spider-Man will be released on July 28, 2017, while Captain America: Civil War is due on May 6, 2016.
