Metal Gear Solid Fan Remake Shuts Down for Reasons Unknown

Shadow Moses, the Unreal Engine 4 fan remake of the original Metal Gear Solid for PC, is no more. Its developer said in a succinct statement on Facebook today that the project is closing down “for reasons beyond our control.” The full statement can be seen below.

“We have an important announcement to make today: We have to cancel the Shadow Moses Project for reasons beyond our control,” the developers said. “We would like to thank everyone for the tremendous support we have received.”

We reported on Shadow Moses back in January. Its creator, Airam Hernandez, explained at the time that the game is a completely unofficial remake of Metal Gear Solid. Rights-owner Konami had no involvement, and as such, this project’s continued life was never a sure thing.

“Konami owns the MGS copyright and therefore sooner or later we will need their full permission. We have therefore chosen to openly share this project from the beginning so that we can deal with any issues that may arise as they come,” Hernandez said at the time. “We believe this is better than putting years of work into a project only to get it shut down.”

It is not immediately clear if Konami is behind the sudden shutdown. A video posted on the Shadow Moses Facebook page in February said the developers were going to make a “huge announcement” on March 14.

Shadow Moses is the name of an island featured in the original Metal Gear Solid. You can learn more about the development of Shadow Moses, which had apparently been in development since October 2015, on the game’s Facebook page.
