Everything You Missed in The Star Wars Rogue One Trailer

Rebel Rebel

Rogue One: A Star Wars Story released its highly anticipated teaser trailer earlier today, and it was packed full of exciting little details that possibly outline the story and characters in this non-mainline Star Wars “sequel.” We know that the film takes place before the events of Episode IV: A New Hope, and its overarching plot follows a small band of Rebels as they attempt to steal the plans for the first Death Star, but what else did the trailer reveal? We have an in-depth video breakdown here, but read on for a text-based list of everything we spotted–and the lingering questions we now have–in the Rogue One teaser.

Don’t Look Back in Anger

Here’s our first look at Rogue One’s main character, Jyn Erso (played by Felicity Jones), being led through what we assume is the Rebel Base on Yavin IV while in some sort of restraints. Our guess is that this footage is likely from the start of the film, given we know Erso will be the one leading the rest of the team during their in-movie mission. But why exactly is she in trouble with the Rebel Alliance in the first place?

Droid is the Word

Callbacks to A New Hope abound in this shot. This location is clearly the interior of one of the large Massassi Temples the Rebel Alliance used as their base while on Yavin IV, and all the uniforms, droids, and other machinery you can see are all spot-on recreations from the original Star Wars movie. You can even spot one of those weird little walking GNK droids down the left side of the hangar, as well as some classic astromechs and an X-Wing.

Bad Reputation

“Forgery of Imperial documents. Possession of stolen property. Aggravated assault. Resisting arrest,” intones the voiceover during this sequence, describing what we’ll naturally assume is Erso’s extended rap sheet. But who’s reading out these charges? Will Erso also find herself in Imperial custody at some stage (given one of the charges is forgery of Imperial documents)? Or is someone from the Rebellion just recounting all the reasons she should totally be working with the good guys?

Rogue-like

We don’t know the official name of this character yet (he’s being played by actor Diego Luna), but we do know he’ll become part of Erso’s team for the rest of the movie. He’s got the look of a dashing, maverick pilot about him though, doesn’t he?

Kick Ass

Here’s Erso taking down a group of classic costume Stormtroopers (that is, wearing armor from the original trilogy) using what looks like some sort of baton. Erso’s obviously one bad-ass fighter with a history of going against the Empire. While we’re not 100% sure exactly where this scene takes place, the sandy environs and background buildings are very reminiscent of Tattoine (although that’s far from the only desert-like planet in the Star Wars universe).

Mystery Bomber?

It’s hard to make out, but it seems like the shadowy figure on the left has just activated a detonator, causing the explosion below. And if you look closely enough, it seems like the thing that’s blowing up is an Imperial tank (glimpsed later in the trailer). Is this sequence part of a coordinated Rebel attack?

Duck and Cover

That’s definitely Erso diving for cover as that background explosion sends those poor troopers flying. Question is, who’s that person she’s protecting?

Packed With Cheese

“This is a Rebellion, isn’t it? I rebel.” Even for a Star Wars movie, that’s one hell of a cheesy line. But you know, Felicity Jones totally sells it here. We love it.

Familiar Faces

Mon Mothma, Rebellion leader from the original trilogy, makes a return here, still rocking the whole robe/curtain rope costume she had from the earlier movies. This scene, and the voice-over that accompanies it, outlines the mission the Rebels have lined up for Erso; find, and then steal, the plans for the original Death Star.

Not Sure if Moon or Not

The Death Star is under construction, with some Star Destroyers arrayed in the foreground to give you a sense of how just massive this gigantic battle station is.

Power Walk

Erso and Diego Luna’s character walking with purpose as Rebel pilots and soldiers scramble. Are the Rebels about to launch an attack, or are they responding to one?

Cape Fear

Ben Mendelsohn’s yet-unnamed Imperial character stands imposingly on what could the Death Star’s bridge. While the design of his costume screams Grand Admiral, there’s also speculation that Mendelsohn’s character is a high-ranking official within the Imperial Security Bureau (the ISB). The ISB, last seen in Star Wars Rebels, is an intelligence agency set up by the Empire to ensure it’s citizens’ loyalties. Mendelsohn is also holding a laser pistol. Is he about to straight-up murder someone?

Tanking It

Imperials march what appear to be some prisoners through city streets. That imposing-looking tank in the background is the one we think gets blown up at the start of the trailer, and is being ridden by a trooper sporting a helmet that’s very reminiscent of Clone Troopers from the prequel trilogy.

Power Armor

Actor Forest Whitaker’s heavily-armored, limping character is yet unnamed, and his narration acts as the voice-over for the rest of the trailer. His armor is unique for the Star Wars universe, looking like it’s been cobbled together from disparate parts (and why does he have a oxygen mask attached?) Is he on the side of the Rebels?

Moisture Farm?

Our first look at a brand new Stormtrooper type and what looks like a burning vaporator in the background. Vaporators are the devices used on moisture farms (such as poor old Uncle Lars in Episode IV), so are these troopers in the act of destroying another family’s livelihood?

Erso, Diego Luna, and another yet-unnamed character (the droid, rumored to be voiced by actor Alan Tudyk) run through what looks like an Imperial base. Given the number of Stormtroopers running in the very next shot, this place–wherever it is–is obviously important, as it’s jam-packed with security.

Staff Meeting

Action superstar Donnie Yen shows off his martial art skills, taking down a few Stormtroopers with what looks like a staff. And given the way Yen holds the staff like a walking stick, and that these Stormtroopers have their weapons pointing down, is this confirmation that Yen’s character is actually blind in the film? Could he also be, given his skills and ability to attack without full vision, Force-sensitive? Or are we seriously over-reaching here?

Blast Radius

This exploding Imperial transport looks to be docked right next to some sort of bunker entrance. Is this part of a Rebel attack?

Bad Day for the Empire

Mendelsohn’s character striding in ankle deep water. If we were to hazard a guess, we’re going to say this occurs in the aftermath of the attack seen in the previous scene, given the Stormtrooper bodies strewn about. There’s also what looks like the smoldering remains of an X-Wing in the background (to the left of Mendelsohn’s character).

Smoke? OR SNOKE?

Here’s one of the most interesting shots in the whole trailer. Those are Imperial Guards in the background, and they only ever protect the Emperor. So is Palpatine actually in the room? If so, who’s the hooded figure kneeling before him? Or if the hooded figure is Palpatine himself, then who could he possibly be demeaning himself to?

Erso and team storm the beach against some towering AT-ATs, in what looks like the Star Wars version of Saving Private Ryan. Check out the look of these AT-ATs–sleeker, with a colored panel on the side, turrets on their “cheeks”, and red lights along the bridge of their “nose.” Design-wise, they’re more reminiscent of the AT-ATs in Star Wars Rebels thanthe original trilogy design.

Tie Fighter

And here’s the big hero shot of Erso, wearing what seems to be a TIE Fighter pilot’s uniform. We’re going to take a wild guess and say Erso’s not actually turning Imperial here, but is rather donning the uniform as part of the team’s Death Star plans heist.
