See Zelda: Ocarina of Time’s Gerudo Valley in Unreal Engine 4

A very talented modder has recreated Gerudo Valley from classic Nintendo 64 title The Legend of Zelda: Ocarina of Time using Epic’s Unreal Engine 4. The results, which you can see in the video below, are absolutely stunning.

According to details included alongside the video, creator CryZENx’s method involved ripping the map from 2011’s Ocarina of Time 3DS re-release. From there, Epic’s engine was used to create the entire map from scratch.

CryZENx has also made the project files available for anyone to download and tinker with. We’re unlikely to get an official remake of the game in this vein from Nintendo, so perhaps the best we can hope for is that the game’s incredibly talented community of fans come together to remake it. The next entry in the storied Legend of Zelda series is expected for Wii U this holiday season. Nintendo is expected to discuss it further at E3 in June, though this is not confirmed.

Producer Eiji Aonuma has said Nintendo hopes to deliver “something new” and surprising with the Legend of Zelda game for Wii U. He mentioned that Ocarina of Time–the first 3D entry in the RPG series–as being “the base of our secret sauce.”

He continued: “But this time, the change in flavor will be like going from Japanese food to Western-style food. Perhaps, players will be surprised … Please look forward to it, because I think we’ll be able to make ‘something new’ like Ocarina of Time was.”

Nintendo is also set to debut its next gaming platform, codenamed the NX, this year. Rumours have suggested a version of the new Zelda is also in the works for NX system and could launch this year.
