Following its recent revival for a short, six-episode season, everyone involved with The X-Files is interested in doing more. And while it sounds like another season is expected to happen, it won’t be coming in the next year.

Fox bosses Dana Walden and Gary Newman were asked during a conference call today about the prospect of another X-Files event series, as this most recent season was called. According to Deadline, the two sounded “very optimistic,” with Walden saying, “We have had conversations with Chris Carter and David Duchovny and Gillian Anderson. I believe everyone is on board to do another installment of the show.”

And although that means nothing is planned for this coming season’s schedule, Walden noted, “[H]opefully this season we will be able to get it done and that [this] same time next year, we will have something to announce.”

Series stars Duchovny and Anderson continue to work on other projects, which makes scheduling part of the challenge in doing the series. Newman elaborated on the talks happening with Duchovny, Anderson, and Carter (the show’s creator), saying that among the topics is “what kind of episodic order makes sense. Some of that is driven by schedules. Conversations are ongoing. I can tell you that all of them would like to do more of these, and certainly the network and studio want to do more.”

Newman also said a new season could come during the 2017-18 season, though that isn’t yet confirmed.

The recent event series, which essentially served as a tenth season of the show, aired in January and February. Deadline notes it performed well, being Fox’s top video-on-demand program behind only Empire.

Prior to that, the show was last seen on the air in 2002, though we did get a mediocre film in 2008. The event series, which had its ups and downs (certainly more of the latter, save for the brilliant Darin Morgan-penned third episode), ended on a cliffhanger. Carter told Entertainment Weekly back in February that he “wasn’t trying to set up a movie [with the ending], just an ongoing story.”
