The Highs and Lows of EA’s E3 2016

Now that E3 has wound down, let’s take a look back at EA’s E3 offerings and the company’s greatest highs, lows, and biggest games from the show. And be sure to check out our complete list of the most interesting news from EA’s press briefing.

Highlights: Titanfall 2 Features Single-Player Campaign

The original Titanfall was heavily criticized for not including a single-player campaign, but EA is changing that with the sequel. Judging from the cinematic trailer, the campaign looks really promising, too. The Titans are now sentient and have somewhat of a personality. The campaign seems to pay homage to some of Isaac Asimov’s laws of robotics, which is really cool.

Highlights: EA Introduces Play to Give Initiative

Earlier in the week EA announced a program where earning in-game achievements in some of its games will get the publisher to donate up to a million dollars to a variety of charities. But the developer also called out the charity event during its press conference. These charitable foundations include Code.org, Code2040, HeForShe, National Center for Women & Information, and SpecialEffect. The following games that feature these objectives include Battlefield 4, Battlefield Hardline, Star Wars Battlefront, Star Wars Galaxy of Heroes, Fifa 16, and Madden NFL 16. For more information on the initiative, check out EA’s website.

Highlights: Amy Hennig’s Star Wars Game

A lot of Uncharted fans were saddened by the fact that Uncharted writer Amy Hennig left Naughty Dog to join EA. Luckily during EA’s press conference, we got to see a sneak peak at the Star Wars game that she’s working on. While details are still super scarce on the title, the little snippet that was revealed did looks awesome and, dare we say, a bit Uncharted-esque.

Highlights: EA Originals Initiative

During its E3 press conference, the company revealed its “EA Originals” initiative. The new initiative aims to provide support for more high-quality indie games that will be published under the EA banner. One title that EA showed off at its press conference was a game called Fe, which looks like an action-adventure game that a lot of people are saying looks like a mixture of Journey and Spyro.

Needs Improvement: Not Many Games Shown

With only half a dozen or so games shown in-depth, there weren’t very many titles at EA’s press conference this year. It’s noticeably less when you contrast it with EA’s press conference last year, which showcased at least nine titles.

Needs Improvement: No Megaton Surprises

In addition to the dearth of titles shown, there weren’t that many surprises or megaton announcements either. We knew that Titanfall 2, Battlefield 1, Mass Effect Andromeda, Fifa 16, and Madden 16 would all be at the show.

Biggest Games: Titanfall 2

Just because we knew about Titanfall 2 doesn’t mean it didn’t look great. With its new single player campaign and more refined multiplayer, the sequel could be the huge AAA mech-fighting title we’ve been waiting for. You’ll be able to get your hands on a mech this December when the game launches.

Biggest Games: Battlefield 1

World War I isn’t a popular setting for first-person shooters nowadays, but EA somehow manages to make it work with Battlefield 1. Despite taking place in the early 1900s, the game somehow manages to look modern and edgy. It’s an oddly refreshing setting that seems to cover many theatres within the Great War. The game is on track to release this October.

Biggest Games: Mass Effect Andromeda

While EA’s Mass Effect Andromeda trailer didn’t reveal too much, the fact that it’s a new Mass Effect is reason enough to get excited. We do know that the game will feature new planets, new alien species, and ultimately, a new galaxy to explore.

Biggest Games: FIFA 17

While soccer/football games have been around since the 8-bit era, EA is really trying to innovate with Fifa 17. Not only will there be improved ball physics, but the company is introducing a story mode. Fifa 17 will be heavily story-driven and the game will even feature real-life soccer managers like Jurgen Klopp, Jose Mourinho, and more.
