FIFA 14 is 2013’s UK Christmas number one

FIFA 14 has taken the title of Christmas number one in the UK for 2013.

An 18 per cent rise in sales last week saw the game finish 17,000 units ahead of Call of Duty: Ghosts in the chart week before December 25. FIFA 14 is now the eighth UK Christmas number one for the long-running football series.

EA last took the title in 2008 with FIFA 09, with the spot being held predominantly by Call of Duty titles since the launch of Modern Warfare in 2007. Since then, Modern Warfare 2, Black Ops, and Black Ops II have all enjoyed the coveted number one finish.

Sales board Gfk Chart-Track noted that EA has taken 14 of the Christmas number one spots since it started tracking game sales 29 years ago. EA and Activision have jostled for the festive fiefdom since 2003, with only one game from another publisher–The Elder Scrolls V: Skyrim–taking the title in 2011.

Hefty sales also helped Assassin’s Creed IV: Black Flag jump from fifth to third, with Battlefield 4 and Lego Marvel Super Heroes following in fourth and fifth.

The rest of the UK top 10 is made up of GTA 5 in sixth, Just Dance 2014 in seventh, Need for Speed: Rivals in eighth, Killzone: Shadow Fall in ninth, and Minecraft: Xbox 360 Edition at tenth.
