Video game retailer GameStop is launching a new donation initiative that will allow shoppers to give to the Make-A-Wish foundation at stores across the country. Starting May 1 and running through May 31, GameStop shoppers will be given an opportunity to make a $1 donation to the wish-granting organization when they shop at GameStop and Spring Mobile stores in person or online.
GameStop aims to raise at least $75,000 in charitable donations during the month, the company said in a press release today. The retailer’s partnership with Make-A-Wish began in 2007, and through their efforts, more than a thousand children have been granted shopping sprees to date. In 2009, GameStop even brought WWE fighter John Cena to a store to play video games with a young boy.
“Wish kids are such an inspiration to me personally, and I’m excited to be able to offer our loyal customers an opportunity to show their support for this great organization by giving to those children in need,” GameStop CFO Rob Lloyd said in a statement. Lloyd is also a board member of the Make-A-Wish North Texas chapter.
Today’s announcement comes after GameStop told us last month that the company would be expanding its support for Make-A-Wish in 2014.
The Make-A-Wish Foundation is a non-profit organization that grants “wishes” to children with life-threatening medical issues. World of Warcraft and Diablo developer is also a regular supporter of the Make-A-Wish foundation, most recently donating sales of World of Warcraft pets and mounts last year to benefit the organization.
