While you may frequently be pushing your APM skills, how often are you getting the chance to improve your WPM? The single screen KeyBlasto provides you with a nostalgic experience of an old school typing game. You also get the satisfaction of your defending ghost issuing a one-shot, one-kill blast towards the invading “word–Zergs”.
The starscape background creates a serene frame for the stream of advancing Zerglings, Banelings, Hydralisks and Ultralisks. Words range anywhere from a single letter, to polysyllabic nightmares, bent on crushing your fingers. As you advance in stages and ranks, watch for the background to shift colors subtly. Though the ranks are well-defined as you level, we would love to see additional progress reinforcement possibly with the addition of other abilities or enemy types.
Even though you can compete with up to four players, the scoring system doesn’t really highlight the feeling of a challenge or versus mode. We felt this could be fleshed out a bit more as KeyBlasto is quite enjoyable when played with friends. When you do play versus, each player takes on their own set of words which cannot be attacked by others.
Another opportunity for improvement would be mechanically. When you type a word you use the space bar to send it rather than enter. It feels a bit unnatural, which may be an intended way to up the challenge aspect, but if you pick up the game after not having played in a while, it can be jarring.
Take some time to challenge yourself; we’re sure you’ll have a blasto! Let us know what you think in the comments.
