Capcom Releases Resident Evil: Revelations 2 PC’s Canceled Co-Op Mode

PC gamers who purchased Resident Evil: Revelations 2 last week were understandably upset when it was discovered that a mode advertised on the game’s Steam page–local co-op play–had been cut. Modders took it upon themselves to develop the feature, and now Capcom itself is looking to make amends by releasing an official local co-op mode.

“The development team has been exploring various options and we’re in the process of creating a way for players to utilize a local co-op feature,” Capcom said in a post on Revelations 2’s Steam page.

That feature is now available in beta on Steam, allowing both the campaign and Raid modes to be played cooperatively in split-screen.

Here’s how to enroll in the beta:

  • From your Steam Library list, right-click on Resident Evil: Revelations 2 and select ‘Properties’
  • Select the ‘Betas’ tab.
  • Type bhr2qasplitmaster00 (case-sensitive) in the ‘Enter beta access code’ field and then click Check Code.
  • Now, select “qa_split_master” from the pull-down menu and click Close.
  • Wait for the Steam client to finish downloading the patch.
  • Launch Resident Evil: Revelations 2

As this has seemingly been put together on short notice, there are some issues that Capcom has detailed. Most notably, co-op currently requires that you use two controllers that support XInput. That’s a group that includes the Xbox 360 and Xbox One controllers, but other controllers (including PS3 and PS4 DualShock controllers) may require players to use XInput emulation software to get them to work.

Menu options and UI elements related to co-op haven’t yet been implemented. As a result, actually getting into co-op isn’t something you’ll do from the menu. In the case of campaign mode, you’ll press the Start button on the second player’s controller after gameplay begins. For Raid mode, the second player needs to press Start while in the pre-match staging area, the Vestibule.

Online support for Raid mode is not yet in place on any platform. Back in January, Capcom said the feature had been delayed and would be coming at some point after the release of the final episode, scheduled for March 17.

In the meantime, Episode Two was released just today, offering the next portion of the campaign mode and adding new Raid mode content. You can check out GameSpot’s review here.
