Angry Birds Movie Opens With $43 Million, Captain America #1 Again in US

The weekend box office numbers are in, and Captain America: Civil War was again the No. 1 film at the US box office. It brought in $72.6 million Friday-Sunday, bringing its domestic total to $295.9 million, according to USA Today. The superhero action movie has now made $940 million worldwide.

Disney is having a big year, as Civil War is now the third consecutive movie from the company that that passed $800 million, following Zootopia and The Jungle Book. Additionally, the 13 movies in the Marvel Cinematic Universe released over the past eight years have now brought in a combined $10 billion worldwide.

The Angry Birds movie also opened this past Friday in international markets. Deadline reports that the film made $43 million in 74 markets. In 37 of those markets, it was the No. 1 movie, and also broke a record for performance of an original animated movie in May.

It’s even performing 20 percent better than 2014’s The Lego Movie when comparing the same markets and using current exchange rates.

Angry Birds opens in the US this coming Friday, May 20. Reviews have been mixed.
