Apple TV’s Siri Search Will Have Limited Availability

Apple made a big showing of its Siri integration during its Apple TV reveal yesterday, but the much-touted feature will only be available in 8 countries.

In its developer notes for Apple TV first spotted by TechRadar, Apple makes it clear the Siri remote will only be available in the following countries:

  • Australia
  • Canada
  • France
  • Germany
  • Japan
  • Spain
  • United Kingdom
  • United States

All other countries will come “packaged with the Apple TV Remote,” which looks identical to the Siri-enabled remote, but pushing the mic button will open “the onscreen search app.”

What isn’t clear is whether or not the two remotes are truly different or not. If there is a difference between the hardware of the remotes–for example, the Apple TV Remote simply doesn’t include a microphone, then future inclusion of Siri functionality to countries other than the eight listed above will require more than just a patch.

Apple revealed its new Apple TV as part of its special live event, during which it also revealed the long-rumored, extra-large iPad Pro.
