Gjallarhorn, the exotic rocket launcher in Destiny, can’t be upgraded in the upcoming Taken King expansion, as is the case with certain weapons and armor.
Bungie delivered this news today in its weekly update, which largely focuses on clarifying many of the new details revealed as part of yesterday’s livestream. It runs through a variety of questions, including whether Gjallarhorn has been redesigned, to which it answers, “Gjallarhorn will remain a Year One Exotic at Year One levels.”
What that means is that Gjallarhorn, currently the most powerful weapon in the game, likely won’t remain that way once The Taken King rolls in. While we’ve gotten a look at many of the new items coming, we’ve yet to hear about the new exotics being added. It’s possible something will take its place, but that remains to be seen.
Gjallarhorn was recently obtainable from Xur, Destiny’s merchant who shows up on weekends with (sometimes) desirable goods.
While The Taken King may mark the end of Gjallarhorn’s reign as Destiny’s preeminent weapon, it’s also doing a whole lot else. That includes dramatically altering the game’s leveling system, doubling the available vault space, and replacing Peter Dinklage as the voice of Ghost, your in-game companion.
