E3 2016: The Biggest Games We’re Expecting to See

Grand Expectations

From intense multiplayer shooters to vast open-world RPGs, E3 provides something to enjoy for every gamer. But while most publishers’ full lineup is kept secret until showtime, we already know some of the heavy hitters that are going to make an appearance at this year’s big show. Click ahead to check out what we think will be some of the biggest and best E3 2016 games.

And be sure to come back frequently as we update this gallery with more games we expect to see.

Battlefield 1

Rather than follow the footsteps of its competitors, the latest entry in the long-running Battlefield franchise throws players into comparatively low-tech World War I. Early footage of the game has teased tank battles, trench warfare, and biplane dogfights, all of which we can’t wait to hear more about at E3. Battlefield 1 is returning to its historical warfare roots, which should be an exciting prospect for hardcore and new fans alike.

Call of Duty: Infinite Warfare

After three years since its last release, Infinity Ward is returning to Call of Duty with Infinite Warfare. This latest entry takes place in the distant future where military warfare has expanded into the far reaches of space. While the game will feature traditional first-person shooting action, it’ll also sport an emphasis on space combat. We’re looking forward to seeing how much the game’s setting will alter its highly-refined gameplay.

Deus Ex: Mankind Divided

Deus Ex: Mankind Divided is the upcoming sequel to 2011’s Deus Ex: Human Revolution, and continues the adventures of mechanically augmented protagonist Adam Jensen. Players jump into another cyberpunk action-RPG adventure where good and evil aren’t always clearly defined. Like previous games in the franchise, players can tackle situations from several different angles: combat, stealth, hacking, or through dialogue.

Dishonored 2

Arkane Studios’ Dishonored 2 was a key announcement of Bethesda’s E3 press conference last year. The developer had revealed very little up until then, but what we saw got us excited to find out more. Set 15 years after its predecessor, this sequel will let players control either Empress Emily Kaldwin or Corvo Attano (the protagonist from the first game), as they set out to reclaim the throne of Dunwall. As in the first game, the player character is an assassin armed with an assortment of otherworldly abilities, which they can use to accomplish missions in numerous ways.

Final Fantasy XV

The long-awaited Final Fantasy XV is only a few months away from release, but we’re still eager to hear more details about the game at this year’s show. The latest entry in Square Enix’s iconic RPG franchise puts players in control of Prince Noctis as he embarks on an adventure with his friends to reclaim a powerful crystal that was stolen from his kingdom. The plot may sound a little familiar, but unlike previous games, Final Fantasy XV will put a major focus on exploration and real-time combat.

I am Setsuna

I am Setsuna is the first project by Tokyo RPG Factory, a studio formed as a part of Square Enix’s initiative to create more original JRPGs. It’s designed to evoke the style of ’90s RPGs, utilizing an active-time battle system based heavily on the classic Chrono Trigger.

Sid Meier’s Civilization VI

Sid Meier’s Civilization VI series seems to have shifted its focus to enhancing the unpredictability of the series’ classic turn-based strategy gameplay. It also happens to be the first new game in the franchise in nearly six years, making it one of the most highly anticipated 4X strategy games of 2016.

Titanfall 2

Respawn Entertainment’s upcoming Titanfall sequel is already confirmed for this year’s E3. While its predecessor was a Microsoft exclusive, Titanfall 2 is going multiplatform. Outside of a few rumors detailing a grappling hook mechanic, not much is currently known about what the game will be like. However, fans should expect more competitive first-person shooting mixed with mech theatrics.

Mass Effect: Andromeda

Mass Effect: Andromeda is the latest entry in Bioware’s critically acclaimed Mass Effect series. Although the game shares the same universe as the original trilogy, it’s not to be confused as a direct sequel to the series. Andromeda was initially announced during EA’s E3 2015 press conference, but little has been revealed about the game since.

Nioh

Nioh is an upcoming action-RPG by Team Ninja, the studio behind the Ninja Gaiden series. It takes the action elements from the developer’s previous work and combines it with the tense dungeon crawling of Dark Souls. Last month’s alpha demo gave us a taste of what’s to come in Nioh; with more details on the way, we can’t wait to hear more about the game during this year’s show.

The Legend of Zelda (2017)

Nintendo’s much anticipated open-world The Legend of Zelda for Wii U will headline the company’s E3 presentation this year. In fact, Nintendo has said it’ll be the only game they have playable on the show floor. The Legend of Zelda for Wii U was originally set to release in 2015 but has since been hit with numerous delays; it was more recently pushed back to March 2017 to coincide with the launch of Nintendo’s NX console. Expectations for the game are high as it’ll be the first mainline console entry in the Zelda series to come out since 2011’s Skyward Sword on Wii.

Persona 5

The stylish sequel to the critically acclaimed Persona 4 was absent from the E3 show floor last year; luckily, that won’t be the case in 2016. Persona 5 puts players in control of a teenage group of cat burglars that must explore The Palace, an otherworldly castle created from the warped desires of people’s hearts.

Untitled New Forza

A new Forza game is scheduled to make an appearance at this year’s E3. It’s unclear if it’s a new entry in the Motorsport or Horizon series, or if it’s a part of a completely new franchise sub-series altogether. However, Microsoft has made it clear that we’ll be getting more details on the next Forza during its E3 2016 briefing.

Mafia III

The upcoming Mafia III transports players to the New Orleans-inspired city of New Bordeaux, to take on the role of Lincoln Clay, a Vietnam War veteran out to wrest control of his city from the Italian mob. The open-world action-adventure is set in 1968, and seeks to provide an authentic rendition of the time period’s turbulent social climate.

The Last Guardian

The Last Guardian made its big return into the gaming spotlight during last year’s Sony E3 press conference. Since then, the long awaited action-adventure has had a larger presence in trade shows, including both TGS and PSX last year. And with the game set to launch some time in 2016, it’s incredibly likely that we’ll see more of it at this year’s E3.
