Each Wednesday is new comic day and determining which titles are worth checking out can be a daunting task, especially if you’re trying to keep your spending under a certain limit. We’ve gone through the list of new releases to help you decide which books you need to read on Wednesday, March 23.
Batman #50
Written by Scott Snyder
Art by Greg Capullo
Published by DC Comics
The 50th issue of Batman is here. Before Snyder and Capullo leave the series on issue 51, they have to wrap up the Superheavy storyline in this super-sized issue. Bruce Wayne will return as Batman after months of forgetting about his life as the bat. What does this mean for James Gordon, who has been playing Batman while Wayne was gone?
Art Ops #6
Written by Shaun Simon
Art by Eduardo Risso
Published by Vertigo
Issue #6 of Art Ops is the first of a two-part story, where readers get a flashback issue, dealing with the original Art Ops team during the ’70s. Maybe we’ll be learning more about Reggie Riots’ mother and father. Risso takes over art duties for this story, so it will be interesting to see what he brings to the table.
Birthright #15
Written by Joshua Williamson
Art by Andrei Bressan
Published by Image Comics
In the last issue of Birthright, Mikey and Brannan found themselves in front of a whole bunch of police officers. Reality has hit these characters square on the jaw as their fantasy adventure is seemingly over for now. Williamson has crafted the most intriguing story in comics with Birthright. It’s a fantasy book where reality is constantly getting in the way.
G.I. Joe Deviations #1
Written by Paul Allor
Art by Corey Lewis
Published by IDW
The Deviations line of IDW comics has been really interesting so far. We’ve already seen “What if” type stories from the worlds of X-Files, Ghostbusters, and Transformers. This week, G.I. Joe has to take care of Cobra, but this time, Cobra is in charge of the planet. It’ll be interesting to see how this all plays out.
Snowfall #2
Written by Joe Harris
Art by Martin Morazzo
Published by Image Comics
We checked out Snowfall last month on a whim and really enjoyed the first issue which mixes science fiction with contemporary problems and a bit of fantasy. In the future, where global warming has completely messed up the weather (and planet), corporate America is bigger than ever and a terrorist known as the Weather Wizard has popped back up. Conceptually, the book sounds a bit weird, but it’s paced and laid out in an exceptional way.
Sons of the Devil #6
Written by Brian Buccellato
Art by Tony Infante
Published by Image Comics
The series has been on a bit of a break, which stinks because Sons of the Devil has been a really intriguing series. Newcomer artist Tony Infante has been doing a phenomenal job on the new series and it will be interesting to see where Buccellato takes everyone in this next arc.
Star Wars #17
Written by Jason Aaron
Art by Leinil Francis Yu
Published by Marvel Comics
While the Rebel Prison is under attack, Han and Luke are going on a smuggling mission. This is the first time, with Marvel’s current Star Wars run, that we’re going to see what smuggling actually looks like, which may not seem like a big deal to the average person, but fans have never seen Han do what he does best.
Ultimates #5
Written by Al Ewing
Art by Kenneth Rocafort
Published by Marvel Comics
Ultimates is one of the best new series coming from Marvel, next to Vision. This higher-concept, big storytelling is exactly what Marvel needs to help diversify the types of books coming from the publisher. This newly formed super-team is taking on threats before they can reach Earth and in this upcoming issue, they’re headed outside of the universe. This is one of the top three new series in comics. It’s a must read.
Uncanny X-Men #5
Written by Cullen Bunn
Art by Greg Land
Published by Marvel Comics
It’s the end of the first arc of the series, and the X-Men are taking on the Dark Riders. How far are the X-Men going to go to seek revenge for their dying comrade? Considering Cullen Bunn is writing, this is going to be one big finale.
Rattler Graphic Novel
Written by Jason McNamara
Art by Greg Hinkle
Published by Image Comics
Rattler is a haunting tale where a man searches for his missing fiancee and ten years later, he becomes a victim’s rights crusader. The book is brutal and violent, but it’s all a story about love and a bit of obsession. If you’re looking for a standalone story to read this week, this is something you need to check out.
