Following Call of Duty, the Borderlands Series Also Coming to China

Following the Call of Duty franchise, Gearbox Software’s hit shooter series, Borderlands, is coming to China. Kotaku reports that Shanda Games announced today that it is bringing the game to China in the form of Borderlands Online, a free-to-play version of the title built specifically for the Asian country.

Borderlands Online will be released across PC and mobile. We don’t know much about the game’s story just yet, but it will be out sometime in 2015. Shanda is working on the game with 2K Games and Gearbox Software.

Kotaku also reports that 2K Games has even created a dedicated development and support team in Shanghai for the purposes of maintaining and building out Borderlands Online.

In terms of gameplay, Borderlands Online allows players to choose from four distinct character classes–Soldier, Hunter, Siren, and Berserker. Check out the game’s Chinese website for more.

China is a gamer-rich country, so it should come as no surprise that 2K and Gearbox would be eyeing the region as an area of potential growth. Activision is thinking the same way, as it is working on Call of Duty Online–a free-to-play version of the game set in the Modern Warfare era–for release in the country.

The 14-year console ban in China was lifted recently, though that doesn’t impact Borderlands Online or Call of Duty Online, as they are both PC titles.
