In Pictures: Up Close With PlayStation VR

Sony has released a range of images showcasing its PlayStation VR headset, following the announcement of the PSVR release date and price.

PSVR will ship worldwide in October, Sony has said.

PlayStation VR will cost $399 in the US, €399 in Europe, £349 in the United Kingdom, $549.95 in Australia, and ¥44,980 in Japan.

By comparison, Oculus Rift goes on sale later in March for $600, while HTC Vive arrives in April for $800.

However, each PSVR device requires a PlayStation Camera to operate. These are sold separately, at about $60 in North America and £40 in the UK. The device also requires a PS4 console.

Some PSVR games will require Move controller support too. These devices, initially released in 2010, typically cost about $30 or £40 each.

Sony has said it will release a PSVR bundle, packing together the Move controller, a PlayStation camera, a PSVR unit, and a PS4 system. The bundle is only confirmed for release in North America, for now.

PlayStation executive Adam Boyes said on Tuesday that each PSVR device will be sold at a profit.

Although in November last year, Sony executive Shuhei Yoshida suggested the price would be lowered enough to sell the device at a loss.

Palmer Luckey, the founder of Oculus Rift, has praised Sony for PlayStation VR price point. He described it as a “totally fair price“.

Each PSVR pack comes with a standalone external processor box, which resembles the PS4 consoel itself, but is much smaller, around the same size as Nintendo’s Wii.
