Metroid-Style Game Axiom Verge PS4 Release Date Revealed

Axiom Verge, the Metroidvania-style platformer developed by a single person, will launch for the PlayStation 4 and PlayStation Vita on March 31 for $20. It supports Cross-Buy, meaning one purchase gets you the PS4 version along with the PS Vita edition. The game is also coming to PC.

Developer Tom Happ revealed the release date in a post on the PlayStation Blog.

“It’s been the greatest experience of my professional life creating this game,” he said. “I really hope you enjoy it even half us much as I enjoyed making it. Thank you for your support.”

Axiom Verge–which was one of the best indie games we played at E3 last year–sees players taking on the role of Trace, a scientist who awakens after a lab accident in a hostile, alien world. Just like classic games such as Super Metroid, Contra, and Blaster Master, gameplay involves a mix of exploration, powerups, alien creatures, and boss battles.

Happ has also revealed some of Axiom Verge’s powerups. These include:

Nova: A gun that should be more lethal than others, as it has a option to detonate its projectiles mid-air, splitting them into six pieces. This allows you to shoot at targets that may not be in your direct line of sight.

Drill: Rewarded to players after defeating the first boss, the drill lets players dig through the world to find health upgrades and new weapons.

Address Disruptor: A “glitch ray” that corrupts the environment around you. Every enemy can be “glitched,” meaning they’ll respond in different ways. “This opens up a lot of new puzzle ideas for people to explore by glitching every enemy to see what it does,” Happ says.
