We’ve learned more in recent months about how No Man’s Sky plays, but details of its story have remain elusive. In a new video, developer Sean Murray discusses how the game doesn’t have a story so much as it has lore.
“Today, I wanted to show you something new, a little bit of how we approach lore and storytelling in our universe,” Murray wrote on the PlayStation Blog. “It’s a bit different to what you might be used to with some other games. With a universe as open as ours–with a near-infinite number of planets out there to see–we want players to discover everything on their terms. We don’t have huge cut scenes or a traditional linear story.
“There is, however, a real lore in the game. Hopefully everything you find has a reason for existing. When you see a building, we’ve tried to think of who might have built it, and why. It’s something we’re excited to see fans uncover as they play, and put their own interpretations on.”
The video also prominently features Dave Gibbons (of Watchmen fame) and James Swallow (author of novels based on Star Trek, Deus Ex, Warhammer, and other franchises) talking about Adventures in No Man’s Sky. That’s the name of the comic the two are working on that’s included with the limited edition of No Man’s Sky, which tells a story set in the game’s universe.
No Man’s Sky is due out for PS4 and PC on June 21 in North America, June 22 in Europe, and June 24 in the UK.
