The Walking Dead actor Norman Reedus, who was going to play a role in the canceled Silent Hills project, has now spoken out to say a game involving him, Hideo Kojima, and Guillermo del Toro “needs to happen.”
“I’m super bummed that that happened back in Japan,” Reedus said to IGN of the game’s canning. “But I have faith. I have faith that we, the three of us, can do something else.”
Reedus called Kojima and del Toro “geniuses.”
“There were so many ideas and cool future happenings that were thrown around,” Reedus said. “I just can’t see us not picking this up somewhere.”
Reedus went on to say that he has been overwhelmed by the fan reaction to Silent Hills’ cancellation, so much so that it’s caused him say think, “‘Holy balls. It has to happen. You need to do this.'”
As far as how much work was actually done on Silent Hills, Reedus said he didn’t know for sure, stating only that some photography was completed but “we never got into the full story stuff.”
“It’s like destiny, it needs to happen” — Reedus
Reedus hasn’t given up, however. “I have faith that we’re going to do something though because it just seems like it was one of those things that needs to happen. It’s like destiny, it needs to happen,” he said.
In April, Konami confirmed it had canceled plans to develop Silent Hills, a move which del Toro believes “makes no f**king sense.” The game was originally revealed through a free game called P.T.
“We were hoping to actually create some sort of panic with some of the devices we were talking about and it is really a shame that it’s not happening,” del Toro said in October. “When you ask about how things operate, that makes no f**king sense at all that that game is not happening. Makes no f**king sense at all.”
“We had a great experience and had great story sessions with hundreds upon hundreds of designs,” he added. “Some of the stuff that we were designing for Silent Hills I’ve seen in games that came after, like The Last of Us, which makes me think we were not wrong, we were going in the right direction. The thing with Kojima and Silent Hills is that I thought we would do a really remarkable game and really go for the jugular.”
Though Silent Hills as Kojima and del Toro imagined it may never happen, Konami has confirmed that it plans to “continue to develop the Silent Hill series.”
Kojima reportedly left Konami on October 9 after almost three decades at the company. Konami denied reports of his departure, claiming he is still an employee and is instead on vacation. Del Toro, meanwhile, is working on a number of film projects, including Pacific Rim 2.
