Oculus VR has suspended sales of its Oculus Rift virtual reality headset developer kits in China because many customers bought them for the sole purpose of reselling them at a higher price.
An Oculus representative explained the situation on the /r/Oculus subreddit, where a Chinese customer complained that his order of and Oculus Rift DK2 was canceled without reason.
“Yes, it is a bummer that we’ve had to suspend sales in China due to extreme reseller purchases,” the Oculus representative said. “We need to make sure that we are doing what we can to make sure that resellers that are looking to flip our product for a profit are not taking stock away from legitimate developer purchases globally. Our product, in its current form, is a developer kit, meant for developers that develop VR content.”
He added that Oculus is looking into alternative ways to make sure that its development kits are getting into legitimate developer hands in China, and that if you’re just an enthusiast eager to try the device, you should wait for the consumer version. He also said that Oculus doesn’t have a timeline for when it will be able to solve the problem, but that it had made it a top priority.
When asked how common the practice of buying an Oculus Rift just to resell it was in China, the Oculus representative simply said: “We were forced to suspend an entire country from purchasing. I’ll let you put 2 and 2 together.”
