The November 2013 NPD list of top-selling games in the US came out yesterday, and while Call of Duty and Battlefield 4 topped the overall lists, NBA 2K14 “was the best-selling sports video game on next generation consoles, PlayStation 4 and Xbox One, and was the number four best-selling next-gen game overall,” according to NPD.
Factoring in Xbox 360 and PS3, Madden NFL 25 has the edge, but 2K basketball game beat it out on next-gen platforms. Specific sales numbers nor worldwide sales numbers were not made available for either title.
A representative from 2K said, “This marks the first time ever an NBA game topped the charts as the best-selling sports title at the start of a new console generation.”
One reason for the game’s success may come from the fact that the current-gen and next-gen versions of 2K14 are separate games. In a not to GameSpot, 2K said, “2K Sports and Visual Concepts built two different games (current-gen and next-gen), instead of porting the same game to next-gen… This included bringing our head-scanning tech on the road to capture 3D images of almost everyone in the NBA, and including actual audio clips of players and coaches to bring real-life interviews to life in the game like never before. These things helped to set NBA 2K14 on next-gen apart from other sports titles.”
