Preview: WCG 2013

The World Cyber Games brings its Olympic-style StarCraft II tournament to Kunshan, China this year, and will run November 27 through December 1.

Who

The favorites to win this tournament are mainly from Korea. Soulkey was ranked #1 in the 2013 World Championship Series final standings, and 2012 WCS Champion PartinG is fresh off his win at Red Bull Battle Grounds – New York. Another pro to keep an eye on is the relatively unknown, but much feared Protoss Sora. He made waves in the WCG qualifiers by defeating Soulkey and many other Code S mainstays 2-0 to land a spot in WCG. However, don’t get too certain you’ll see these players in the semi-finals.

WCG is one of the most storied tournaments in eSports and scores of titans have fallen to upstart national heroes with nothing to lose. The Evil Genius Suppy is America’s hope for the title, while WCS mainstays MacSed and Jim will represent their home ground in China, and Sen — the most experienced player in the tournament — will be competing for Taiwan.

Where

The World Cyber Games StarCraft II matches will take place on three streams. You can catch most matches on the SC2+ English Stream, and periodically matches will be played on Stage A and Stage D. If you’d like to attend in person at the Kunshan Convention and Exhibition Center, you can find more information about the event at the WCG 2013 website.

When

The WCG 2013 StarCraft II tournament will commence at 5:00 a.m. CET on Wednesday, November 28 and will run through December 1. You can find a full match schedule here. The first two days of competition will feature round robin play for the four groups, while the last two days will focus on an eight-player bracket.

Also, if you’re an old-school Blizzard RTS fan, WCG will be holding a Warcraft III: The Frozen Throne tournament. The first match of that tournament will be TH000 vs Moon on Stage A. Lok’Tar Ogar!
