Sony’s PlayStation 4 was again the top-selling console overall in the United States for September, a position the platform has held in the region for months now. But the Xbox One “continued to see strong momentum” in the month, Microsoft explained in a statement. Exact Xbox One monthly sales figures were not announced, but corporate vice president Mike Nichols said the console enjoyed “solid” year-over-year growth as it relates to console sales and “engagement” on Xbox Live.
Nichols went on to say he’s hopeful the Xbox One will continue its momentum into the holiday season, a period in which Microsoft says it will deliver the “greatest games lineup in the industry and in Xbox history.”
Some of the top titles for the holiday include exclusives like Halo 5: Guardians and Rise of the Tomb Raider, as well as big-name multiplatform games like Fallout 4, Call of Duty: Black Ops III, and Star Wars Battlefront. Nichols also pointed out that the Xbox One platform continues to evolve with the New Xbox One Experience in November (which includes backwards compatibility support for Xbox 360 games), as well as the introduction of the Xbox Online Elite console and controller.
Compared to the Xbox 360 and PlayStation 3, the PlayStation 4 and Xbox One are performing well. In the US, combined sales are “40 percent higher than the combined 23 month totals for PS3 and 360.”
In terms of games, sports titles dominated in September, while Metal Gear Solid V: The Phantom Pain came in third overall. Check out the complete top ten sales chart here.
