Sonic 25th Anniversary Fan Event Coming in July, Sonic Boom 3DS Release Date Announced

Today during the Sonic 25th anniversary panel at SXSW, Sega didn’t announce any new games, but still had some news to share. The publisher announced a Sonic 25th Anniversary event to be held in San Diego in July. The event takes place at the House of Blues on July 22, presumably as part of San Diego Comic-Con, which also takes place that week.

Tickets are priced at $25 each and are available to buy now on this website. Tickets are limited to only around 1,000. Sega is promising “special guests,” as well as musical performances by the groups Crush 40 and Hyper Potions. Attendees can also snack on some food and pick up “exclusive” Sonic merchandise.

Sega also teased that attendees will get an “exclusive first look at the future of Sonic.” Whether this means a new game reveal or something else remains to be seen.

Speaking at the Sonic panel at SXSW today, a Sega representative wouldn’t say if a new game would be announced at the event, but said fans should “totally come to this party,” as Sega will make a “very special announcement.”

Interestingly, Crush 40 lead singer Johnny Gioeli wrote on Facebook last year that Sega may be working on a Sonic “anniversary” game.

“We are planning a few performances for 2016 to commemorate the anniversary of Sonic,” he said. “We might participate in writing new songs for the anniversary game… stay tuned…”

Also during today’s panel, Sega confirmed that Sonic Boom: Fire & Ice will arrive for Nintendo 3DS on September 27. The game was previously expected to come out in 2015 before it was delayed.
