2007’s Oscar-nominated animated movie Surf’s Up is finally getting a sequel–but probably not in the way you imagined. Sony Pictures announced today that it has partnered with the WWE (yes, really) for Surf’s Up 2: WaveMania. The movie will be co-financed by the two companies and is due out in 2017.
wow
The hero of the first movie–Cody Maverick–returns to the spotlight as he seeks to join the “infamous big-wave-riding crew known as The Hang 5.” These characters are voiced by WWE’s John Cena, The Undertaker, Triple H, Paige, and Vince McMahon.
Maverick partners up with The Hang 5 to partake in a “journey to a mysterious surf spot known as The Trenches, where, legend has it, they’ll find the biggest waves in the world.”
More from the plot description: “Cody soon discovers that the life he left behind might be more heroic than what any death-defying wave has to offer.”
Shia Labeouf voiced Maverick in the first Surf’s Up, but it wasn’t mentioned if he’s back for the sequel. In fact, Sony did not say if any of voice actors from the first movie–which also included Jeff Bridges, Zooey Deschanel, James Woods, and Jon Heder–would return.
The first Surf’s Up was directed by Ash Brannon and Chris Buck, but taking the reigns for the sequel is Henry Yu, who is making his directorial debut. Yu was a story artist for both Hotel Transylvania movies. The screenplay is being written by Abdul Williams (Lottery Ticket), while Rainmaker Entertainment–the team behind April’s Ratchet & Clank movie, will produce the film.
