[UPDATE] Following the publication of this story, Activision confirmed in a statement to GameSpot that the publisher is working on a new project with Mr. 900.
“Activision can confirm that they have something in the works with Tony Hawk; more info is coming soon,” a representative for the company said.
The original story is below.
It appears Tony Hawk will ride again. The legendary skateboarder himself revealed this week during his Demolition Radio show on SiriusXM that a new entry in the beloved series is in development.
“We’re working on a game, we are working on a game, it’s pretty cool,” Hawk said when discussing the Pro Skater series, as reported by IGN.
Unfortunately, Hawk did not reveal any further details about the new Tony Hawk’s Pro Skater game, like when it will be released, which studio is developing it, and what platforms it’s coming to. Hawk said in an interview last year that he’s eyeing the mobile market for the next Tony Hawk’s Pro Skater game because that’s where so many players are.
“You just have to adapt and you have to realize where people are going to actually play their games,” Hawk said at the time. “It used to just be Nintendo and PlayStation, and now it’s all kind of devices. So you’ve got to learn to adapt what you know from the technology into those areas…I’ve been wanting to do a mobile game for a long time.”
The most recent game in the series was 2012’s Tony Hawk’s Pro Skater HD, which was developed by Robomodo and launched for Xbox 360, PlayStation 3, and PC. Robomodo CEO Josh Tsui said in summer 2012 the smaller size of Pro Skater HD was meant to show Activision executives that the franchise has potential, which he hopes could spill over into a bigger-scale game.
“The prospect of a fuller game is definitely on the table,” Tsui said at the time. “It’s just a matter of when and how.”
We’ve reached out to Activision for comment.
There you have it. Tony Hawk’s Pro Skater is coming back. But with so little to go on, we can only theorize about what form it might take. I’m personally hoping for a large-scale open-world skateboarding game for Xbox One and PS4, but a game for my mobile that I can play on the way into work would be alluring all the same. What about you?
