Star Wars Rogue One’s K-2SO Droid Detailed, Compared by Actor to an Old Person

During the Rogue One panel today at Star Wars Celebration, actor Alan Tudyk shared some new details on the Star Wars franchise’s newest droid, K-2SO.

A CG character, K-2SO is a towering, reprogrammed droid who speaks his mind. Tudyk joked, “I’m 7’1″ and I’m black, which is really my inner person.”

Captain Cassian Andor (Diego Luna) reprogrammed K-2SO, and in the process of wiping his data, the droid came out with a different temperament.

“When he reprogrammed him, he’s not quite all there,” Tudyk said. “He speaks his mind and says things that can be unsettling; [he’s] just very honest. If you know any old people, it’s like that; he says whatever he thinks.”

In a clip shown at the panel, main character Jyn Erso (Felicity Jones) hands K-2SO a bag, presumably asking him to carry it. However, he drops it on the ground right away. “That’s K2,” Tudyk said. If someone asks him to “go get the bags,” he’s not necessarily going to do it.

“No, I’d rather not,” Tudyk said K-2SO might say. “That’s not my thing.”

Tudyk also shared a story of when he met C-3PO actor Anthony Daniels. He asked Tudyk about the K-2SO character, “Do you wear a suit or are you CGI?” Tudyk informed Daniels that his character is indeed computer-generated. Daniels responded: “You sh**.”

According to director Gareth Edwards, K-2SO is “the antithesis of C-3PO.”

Rogue One, the first-ever Star Wars spinoff movie, comes to theaters on December 16. New footage from the film was shown today during the panel, while Lucasfilm also released a poster.
