New Line has found an actor to play the killer clown Pennywise in the upcoming adaptation of Stephen King’s supernatural horror book, It. Bill Skarsgard, who was in the Netflix series Hemlock Grove, has been tapped for the part, according to The Hollywood Reporter.
He is reportedly in “final negotiations” for the job on the two-part movie. Presumably, he will play Pennywise in both installments.
Tim Curry played Pennywise in the 1990 It miniseries. Skarsgard is the son of Stellan Skarsgard (Good Will Hunting, The Avengers) and the brother of Alexander Skarsgard (True Blood, The Legend of Tarzan).
Directing It will be Andres Muschietti, who is no stranger to the horror genre, having directed Mama. Jaeden Lieberher, Finn Wolfhard, Jack Dylan Grazer, Wyatt Oleff, Chosen Jacobs, and Jeremy Ray Taylor will also appear in the film.
In the story, a group of teens overcome their fears to eventually defeat the creature It, but years later, he returns. As adults, they must work together to do the job again. The first movie will be about the children’s story and the second will chronicle the adults’ narrative.
It’s been a long time coming for the It movie, as Cary Fukunaga (True Detective, Beasts of No Nation) was originally attached to direct, though he would eventually drop out due to creative differences. Will Poulter (The Revenant, The Maze Runner) was pegged to play Pennywise, but the search for a new director took a while and he could no longer commit to it.
It is scheduled to hit theaters in 2017.
