The 17 Best Boss Battles In Any Metal Gear Solid

The End (MGS 3)

In Metal Gear Solid 3: Snake Eater, taking on The End was one patience-testing, yet entertaining, boss battle. In a clash of snipers, Naked Snake had to defeat the veteran sharpshooter. It was a big landscape, and the graphics were amazing on the PS3. It remains one of the most rewarding victories in the Metal Gear franchise. (Photo: Konami)

Sniper Wolf (MGS)

The snowfield showdown between Sniper Wolf and Solid Snake was a classic duel in Metal Gear Solid. There was nowhere to hide in the dark, snowy Alaskan setting, and Snake had to defeat the sniper who had attacked him earlier. Sniping worked. So did a Nikita missile. Boom! (Photo: Konami)

Metal Gear Rays (MGS2)

The surprise main character, Raiden, battled a plethora of Metal Gear Rays at the end of Sons of Liberty. It was an exhausting battle that had players running and shooting for what seemed like forever! (Photo: Konami)

The Boss (MGS 3)

There might not be a more emotionally charged boss battle than the one between Snake and the Boss. It was a classic master-versus-apprentice fight, which had some serious twists when it was all said and done. The battle forever changed the Metal Gear landscape. (Photo: Konami)

Metal Gear REX (MGS)

The ultimate showdown in Metal Gear Solid was a modern-day David vs. Goliath. Solid Snake had to take down Metal Gear REX. In the clash, Snake had to avoid a laser beam, missiles and gunfire. Defeating Rex took more than a few chaff grenades and stinger missiles. (Photo: Konami)

Cyborg Ninja (MGS)

No one knew what to expect when Solid Snake had to take on Cyborg Ninja in Metal Gear Solid. With Ninja's stealth camo and a powerful exoskeleton, the hand-to-hand fighting was one of the more difficult and fun boss brawls in the series. (Photo: Konami)

Metal Gear REX vs. Metal Gear RAY (MGS 4)

In Guns of the Patriots, the massive battle between Metal Gear REX and Metal Gear RAY was the franchise’s King Kong vs. Godzilla moment. It wasn’t a hard fight, but it was so darn fun. (Photo: Konami)

Liquid Ocelot (MGS 4)

Guns of Patriots was full of awesome boss battles, but nothing topped the final face-off between Snake and Liquid Ocelot. The fist fight was beautifully crafted and equally emotional as Snake finally bested his nemesis. (Photo: Konami)

Pyscho Mantis

Psycho Mantis goes down as one of the creepier bosses in any Metal Gear game. Mantis was a FOXHOUND member who had the ability to read minds. Said powers made defeating him pretty freakin' hard. The trick: Changing the controller from slot one to slot two, so he wouldn’t know the next attack. (Photo: Konami)

Revolver Ocelot (MGS)

The key to defeating Revolver Ocelot in Metal Gear Solid was to attack while the sharpshooter was reloading. There were also trip wires booby-trapped to explode. If you’ve already beaten Ocelot, then you know it’s more about what happens after the fight. (Photo: Konami)

Fatman (MGS 2)

The Fatman boss battle in Sons of Liberty was different from any fight in the series to that point. Fatman was an eclectic bad guy who scooted around on rollerblades hiding C4 bombs throughout the Big Shell. Having to disarm the bombs and defeat Fatman made it a memorable exchange. Vamp (MGS 2)

Vamp’s speed and variety of weapons made the fight in the filtration center one of the better boss battles in Sons of Liberty. Players had to watch out for the rejuvenation pool in the center of the action; falling it was lethal. (Photo: Konami)

Vamp (MGS 4)

Vamp survived multiple “deaths” in Sons of Liberty, and he returned in Guns of the Patriots. This showdown was years in the making, and it did not disappoint. After attacking Vamp, players were dismayed to learn that his health quickly regenerated. The trick: Injecting Vamp with a syringe when his health was low. (Photo: Konami)

Shagohod (MGS 3)

The final sequences of Snake Eater remain among the series’ best. The fight-and-chase assault between Boss, Snake and Shagohod showed off the stellar graphics and gameplay of the title. (Photo: Konami)

Quiet (MGS V)

In Phantom Pain, the quarrel between Quiet and Big Boss starts randomly as you enter a certain area on the map. After you’ve out-sniped her, you have the chance to either kill her or recruit her. No matter your choice, just remember: She can be an extremely useful ally. (Photo: Konami)

Sahelanthropus (MGS V)

While it was typical Metal Gear action, the scale of the fight made it epic. It was also fitting that what might be Hideo Kojima’s last Metal Gear wrapped up with man versus machine. (Photo: Konami)

Liquid Snake (MGS)

Liquid Snake just wouldn't go away. After a brawl, Liquid returned to trigger a car chase with his brother. If players were able to maneuver the tunnel and beat Liquid again, they'd finally beat a PlayStation masterpiece. (Photo: Konami)
