The Division Beta Breaks New IP Record With 6.4 Million Players

With The Division‘s open beta now over, Ubisoft has announced that more than 6.4 million people played it across PlayStation 4, Xbox One, and PC. The Division’s beta is now the “biggest ever for a new game brand on current generation platforms.”

By comparison, the Destiny beta in summer 2014 attracted 4.6 million players, though this figure also included PS3 and Xbox 360. At the time, publisher Activision said this was the biggest beta ever for a new IP. The Division is technically a new IP, though it carries the familiar Tom Clancy name.

Ubisoft also announced that The Division beta players logged an average of five hours in the game, with two average hours spent per player in the beta’s Dark Zone. Almost 50 percent of players “went rogue,” meaning they killed friendly players, while players successfully extracted more than 63 million items.

The Division’s open beta started February 18 on Xbox One and came to PS4 and PC a day later. It wrapped up earlier this morning on all platforms.

Its full release is scheduled for March 8. Ubisoft has high hopes for it, as the publisher recently said it could join Destiny, Watch Dogs, and Assassin’s Creed to become of the biggest new IP launches ever.
