Sony isn’t waiting until its PlayStation Experience keynote address tomorrow to make announcements. Eight PlayStation 2 games will arrive for PlayStation 4 tomorrow, December 5, Sony announced today.
The following titles will be available to buy tomorrow from the PlayStation Store in the Americas and Europe:
- Dark Cloud — $14.99
- Grand Theft Auto III — $14.99
- Grand Theft Auto: Vice City — $14.99
- Grand Theft Auto: San Andreas — $14.99
- Rogue Galaxy — $14.99
- The Mark of Kri — $14.99
- Twisted Metal: Black — $9.99
- War of the Monsters — $9.99
In addition, PaRappa the Rapper 2 and The King of Fighters 2000 will be added later.
Every game has Trophy support, and PlayStation boss Shuhei Yoshida notes that each game’s Trophy set was “developed in conjunction with feedback from the original creators to be sure that they capture the spirit and feeling of each game.” In addition, they all run in upscaled 1080p and include support for the following features just like other PS4 games:
- Remote Play
- Live Broadcast
- Share Play
- Activity Feeds
- Second Screen support for game manuals with PlayStation Vita or PlayStation App
People attending PlayStation Experience tomorrow and Sunday can play the following games on the show floor:
- Dark Cloud
- Grand Theft Auto: Vice City
- Grand Theft Auto: San Andreas
- PaRappa the Rapper 2
- Rogue Galaxy
- The King of Fighters 2000
- The Mark of Kri
- War of the Monsters
Sony revealed last month that it was working on emulation technologies that would bring PlayStation 2 games to the PlayStation 4. This was following a survey it sent out in October asking PS4 users to list the most important features they would like to see added to the console. Among these was the option of support for PS1 and PS2 classics.
Looking ahead, Yoshida said Sony will work “tirelessly” to release even more PS2 games for PS4 “on a regular basis,” though none were named outright except for PaRappa the Rapper 2 and The King of Fighters 2000.
Note that this is not exactly backwards compatibility. Even if you still own the PS2 discs, you’ll have to buy them again to play on PS4.
PlayStation Experience runs December 5-6 in San Francisco. Check back with GameSpot all weekend long for all the news from the show.
