The Wild Bunch
The latest trailer for Tom Clancy’s Ghost Recon: Wildlands showcases a lot of fascinating new details about the upcoming open world third-person shooter. From player customization to dual stealth takedowns, there’s a lot to see. Check out the ten things we noticed.
Player Customization
An early shot highlights what appears to be player customization, particularly for equipment. The narrator also alludes to this when he says, “We are survivors, equipping the right gear to survive in the harshest conditions.” It could also mean that you’ll have to manage and equip gear tailored towards specific environmental scenarios and combat situations.
Characters can be seen in different outfits during this sequence, wearing a variety of t-shirts, baseball caps, collared shirts, and tactical jackets. This could be a showcase of the various cosmetic options you can apply to your character and teammates.
Non-Hostile Areas
The trailer also gives us a glimpse of a non-hostile village you can potentially be able to explore in the game. But what’s more important in this shot is the village’s indifference to the Ghosts, which could mean that its citizens are used to the Ghosts’ presence, and possibly even know who they are and what they’re doing to the Santa Blanca cartels. This might have to do with your ability to align yourself with different factions; in this instance, it appears the Ghosts are aligned with the civilians.
The Drone Returns
As we saw in the E3 trailer, you can use a drone to get a bird’s eye view of enemy complexes. The new trailer shows off the drone’s night-vision functionality, which should allow for clandestine missions. It also seems like you’ll be able to use the drone to mark not only enemies, but sniper nests, alarms, searchlight towers, and gun emplacements.
Coordinate Dual Stealth Takedowns
The Ghost Recon series has always emphasized teamwork, especially the silent but deadly kind. Wildlands appears to be no different, offering you the ability to coordinate stealth attacks with your teammates. One moment in the trailer shows two players sneaking up on two enemy gunmen and killing them at the same time, while a later instance shows players deceiving guards into trusting them, then eliminating them before they can catch on.
Santa Muerte
Santa Muerte–a real-life Hispanic folk saint that serves as the personification of death–is once again prominently featured in the trailer. She previously appeared in the form of a statue in the E3 reveal; this time she’s seen as a large make-shift statue set up on what looks to be a radio tower. There’s also an altar devoted to her in another shot with an unknown character standing before it. Santa Muerte seems to serve as a figure of worship for the Santa Blanca drug cartels in the game.
For the uninitiated, Santa Muerte is worshipped by some in Hispanic culture as a figure that ensures safe delivery into the afterlife. Despite her association with death, she is seen by some followers as a fallen angel in purgatory trying to win back the favor of God.
New Vehicle: Stryker Tank
The trailer also features a new drivable vehicle: the IAV (Interim Armored Vehicle) Stryker. It looks like it’ll be an ideal vehicle for driving on the Bolivian Salt Flats, an environment with little to no cover.
Weapon Customization
While there’s no shortage of different guns in the new trailer, a particular weapon that caught our attention was the ACR (Adaptive Combat Rifle), an assault rifle known for its wide-range of modular parts and customization options. Its presence could hint at a possible weapons customization system. Other customizable weapons we saw in the trailer include the following: the JNG-90 snuper rifle, the G36 assault rife, and the M249b light machine gun.
Leader of the Ghosts
The Ghosts’ leader appears once more, with his tattooed face partially hidden by shadows. While his motivations and intentions remain unknown, he’s giving off some serious Colonel Kurtz from Apocalypse Now vibes in this trailer.
Who Lives, Who Dies
In the shot where the Ghosts bring in a prisoner, it’s interesting to note what the narrator says: “We are judges, deciding who will live and who will die.” This could allude to a moral choice system that affects the narrative, which would be a first for a Ghost Recon game. It has been previously confirmed that certain actions you take can affect the world around you. However, it remains unclear if your choices and actions can change the game’s story.
Combined Arms Assault
There’s going to be an assortment of vehicles to commandeer in Wildlands, including trucks, ships, helicopters, motorcycles, and more. The shot above appears to showcase the ability for you and three other players to assemble a convoy with these different vehicles, coordinating a full-on combined arms assault.
