Weekly Recap: Final Fantasy Release Date, More-Powerful PS4 Is Real Maybe

Finally Fantasy

Final Fantasy XV is coming out on September 30, Square Enix announced this week during its Uncovered event in Los Angeles. Additionally, a Final Fantasy XV movie and anime series, among other things, were announced. Here’s a roundup of all the big news.

Ultra High-Definition Graphics

Though Sony has yet to make an official announcement, the evidence for a more powerful PlayStation 4 console continues to mount. The Wall Street Journal today backed up what reports from Kotaku and Eurogamer said earlier: Sony is working on a new version of the PS4 that can handle “higher-end gaming experiences.” This includes virtual reality, the site said, citing sources. Miitomo Arrives

Nintendo’s first smartphone game, Miitomo, has arrived. The game, which is more of an app, launched this week in the west and has now passed 3 million downloads worldwide. [Full story]

“Seamless Open World”

What appears to be a Mass Effect Andromeda marketing survey leaked this week, revealing some story details (we’re the aliens this time), as well as how the game will have a “seamless open world.” [Full story]

Spacebound

This year’s Call of Duty game, which is coming this fall from Modern Warfare developer Infinity Ward, may be set in outer space. That’s according to sources who talked about the unannounced game this week, saying also that it is set in the “very far future” and features “space combat.” [Full story]

Incursions Inbound

During a livestream event this week, Ubisoft shared the first details on April’s Incursions update for The Division, which adds new, raid-like activities (called Incursions) and a player-trading system. You can get all the details on how this works here in this post.

Try Before You Buy

It looks like you can try out Star Wars Battlefront’s Outer Rim DLC weapons without actually needing to buy the expansion. They’re available in the single-player missions, according to Reddit users. It might be a bug, though.

Win the White House

Here’s a cool one. Former US Supreme Court Justice Sandra Day O’Connor helped make a video game that encourages young people to get involved with civics. Mirror’s Edge Clothing

Mirror’s Edge Catalyst is coming out soon and now you can dress like main character Faith thanks to clothing company Musterbrand. The store has rolled out a new line of clothes inspired by the game.

2K Comes to GOG

The Witcher developer CD Projekt Red’s PC store GOG.com has added games from publisher 2K to its ever-growing lineup of titles. Among the newly launched games are Sid Meier’s Pirates and various XCOM games. Head here to see them all.

Greetings, Traveler

World of Warcraft: Traveler. It’s not the name of the game’s next expansion, but rather a children’s book based on the MMO that Blizzard is producing in partnership with Scholastic. You can get all the details about the novel series here.

Unravel Goes Free

You can now play Unravel’s first level as much as you want for 10 hours through EA’s “Game Time” promotion on Origin, the company announced this week. Head here to get started.

Epistory Arrives

Epistory, a gorgeous-looking papercraft game, that follows a young girl and her three-tailed fox through an origami world, arrived this week on PC through Steam. The game has magical abilities, puzzles, and dungeons. You can learn more here on its Steam page.

Watch Paint Dry

A game about watching paint dry–called Watch Paint Dry–made its way onto Steam this week without Valve approving it. The developer behind it says he meant no harm, but rather wanted to expose the loophole by which this could happen. He got his wish, as it’s now been fixed. Art

Need more Metal Gear Solid in your life? Konami has announced a new art book for The Phantom Pain. As its Amazon page reveals, it’s stuffed with art from the stealth-action game, some of which has never been seen before this book.

A New Chapter

Sony Computer Entertainment is no more. As of April 1, the company is known as Sony Interactive Entertainment. You can read a blog post here from Sony boss Shawn Layden explaining the change.

Crossy Road Gets a Disney Twist

Disney Crossy Road, the new version of the uber-popular Frogger-style game, has arrived. As its name suggests, this is Crossy Road, but with a Disney flair. Go get it on iTunes and Google Play.

Long Live Music Games

If you crossed Final Fantasy I with Beatmania, what would you get? Possibly something that looks like Metronomicon, a new rhythm-based RPG that uses modern-day chip tune, electronic, and synth wave artists on its soundtrack. It sounds rad. You can learn more here in this trailer.

They’re making a new Contra game (for mobile; and only in China) and you can now watch the first trailer.

Call of Duty World League Finals
