Why Batman: Arkham Knight Doesn’t Have Co-Op

2015’s action game Batman: Arkham Knight doesn’t have co-op mode, but there is a good reason for that, according to developer Rocksteady Studios. Fundamental to making the game the “ultimate Batman simulator” is putting the player–just one player–into the boots of the Dark Knight himself, the studio says.

“We’re making a Batman game,” a Rocksteady representative said during a recent livestream for the game. “For us, that means getting the player to be the Batman. It’s a single-player experience where you get to pick up the controller and wear the cowl and be that guy. So there won’t be any co-op.”

Arkham Knight launches in June 2015 for Xbox One, PlayStation 4, and PC. Rocksteady also recently confirmed that it is aiming for graphical parity across all platforms, though a specific resolution and frame rate have not been finalized due to the game still being around six months away from launch.
