Why New Hulk Movie May Not Happen for a While, According to Mark Ruffalo

Actor Mark Ruffalo is hopeful that a new standalone Hulk movie will be made–but he doesn’t expect it to happen anytime soon, if it ever happens at all.

In a new interview with Yahoo! Movies, Ruffalo says it’s in the early stages of production, but there are issues to overcome. Universal–not Marvel–owns the rights to standalone Hulk movies, he points out. And those two companies aren’t the best of pals right now when it comes to the Hulk character.

“I think they’ve been working on it,” Ruffalo said. “Marvel and Universal famously don’t get along very well, and so that’s working against us, definitely. But I know for a fact that everyone is holding out hope that one day we can do it.

“But the nature of the relationship right now, it’s a little prohibitive,” he added. “And I hope that that changes, that changes with regimes, it changes over the course of time. But right now it doesn’t look particularly promising.”

At one time, Jurassic World studio Universal had the total film rights to the Hulk character. However, Polygon reports that some of the rights went back to Marvel after Ang Lee’s 2003 movie Hulk, which in turn allowed for the character to appear in some Marvel films. The latest standalone Hulk movie was 2008’s The Incredible Hulk, which starred Edward Norton in the lead role.

While we may have to wait a while for the next Hulk-centric movie, the super-strong green superhero will play something of a significant role in 2017’s Thor: Ragnarok.
