Sea of Thieves, the upcoming Xbox One and PC game from esteemed UK studio Rare is “gonna be the best game that Rare has ever made.” That’s according to Microsoft executive Kudo Tsunodo, who talked more about the upcoming game in an interview with Official Xbox Magazine (via GamesRadar).
“I think with Sea of Thieves, what you’re really going to see as you find out more about the game is that it’s also about allowing people to create their own gaming memories” Tsunoda said. “It’s about enabling people to create their own stories through limitless possibilities, and I think that’s what Rare has always done a great job of historically; it is great at creating these super emotional memories and attachments that people have to games.”
Tsunoda went to say that Sea of Thieves’ use of user-generated content will be one of its biggest selling points.
“I think what you’re gonna see in Sea of Thieves as we go forward and start talking more about the game is how [the studio is] enabling that kind of player-generated emotional and memory-driven stories that can happen within a game to happen within Sea of Thieves,” he said. “And I think that’s what Rare does well. That’s what we’re going to keep having them doing in the future. And Sea of Thieves is gonna be the best game that Rare has ever made.”
Rare recently celebrated its 30th anniversary. Microsoft celebrated the milestone with Rare Replay, an Xbox One bundle featuring 30 games from the developer’s history, including Banjo-Kazooie, Perfect Dark, and Kameo.
Sea of Thieves was announced at E3 2015 in June. The game is, as its name suggests, themed around pirates. It features a shared world which can be inhabited by multiple players. The announcement was described by the developer as “By far the most ambitious game Rare has ever created.”
The trailer (above) showcased gameplay on a tropical island, and naval battles with groups of different players going head-to-head on ships in the sea. Sea of Thieves is a Window 10 and Xbox One exclusive. No release date has yet been revealed.
