The latest Bourne movie is just around the corner, but if you’re expecting to hear a lot of Matt Damon in it, you’ll likely walk away disappointed.

Damon is the star of the film, playing the eponymous role of Jason Bourne, but for his fourth time as the character, he doesn’t have a whole lot to say. In an interview with The Guardian, Damon and director Paul Greengrass reveal that the actor only ended up with roughly 25 lines of dialogue in the entire film.

Asked what it was like to work with others as an actor whose job is more often to beat people up than talk to them, Damon said, “Well, I’ve done it three times. In the first movie, the Marie Kreutz character is still alive, so Bourne has a sounding board and he’s more confused about who he is and a lot more chatty.

“Once she dies in the first act of the second movie, it’s really a very lonely character. And we talked about that mostly on the second one. I remember [writer] Tony [Gilroy] writing me an email saying, ‘You do realize what this means? You do realize you’re not going to talk in this movie.’ I said, ‘No, I love that.'”

Damon ended up with a similar situation this time around once work on Jason Bourne was complete, with Greengrass calling Damon to inform him how little he speaks in the final cut. But he thinks the actor does a fine job of conveying emotion without actually speaking, pointing to a scene near the end of The Bourne Supremacy where he visits the daughter of two people he murdered.

The subject of a sequel also came up in the interview, and neither was willing to rule it out completely, as they did following 2007’s The Bourne Ultimatum.

“Paul always says that the worst time to ask that question is right after you’ve made one,” Damon replied.

“I’m not going to make the mistake of saying ‘never,’ like I did before,” Greengrass said. “But I’m not going to be sitting around. I’ve got other films to make.”

“My guess is it will be a while before we’ll even get around to doing another one,” Damon added. “They might reboot me before I bow out.”

Jason Bourne opens on Friday, July 29. Alongside Damon, it stars Tommy Lee Jones, Alicia Vikander, and Julia Stiles.
